MARBLES

Within an emerald bag
held tight and close,
the king and his knights
gave rein to flights
of fancy and freedom.

In their world of colour,
transparency and order,
odd marbles became
skittles and means
of exchange and loss.

Each addition
was placed in direct line
and within their group
so that everyone
knew their place.

Emptied they fell into clusters,
huddled like layabouts,
coupling and clinking
and pulling towards
some new understanding.
