Dan Provost on the Other Side of the
Bettering Oneself Takes Time
Jennifer really never had
a reference point for her recent
uninhibited behavior until
she read Rabelais, Gargantua
and Pantagruel.
The story focuses on the
training of Pantagruel, a
massive giant who is taught by
his father, Gargantua, to live
a well rounded life.
Lessons included athletics,
reading the classics, and drinking
to excess.
When Jennifer read the book,
assigned to her in the Renaissance
Literature class she was taking at the
local community college,
she felt a need to dance& howl at
the moon, and read both classic
and contemporary poetry.
Now, she quotes the
great writers like Erasmus,
Poe, and Lyfshin--to all
her friends on Friday
night when they meet
at Joe's Bar and Grill.
Most of her buddies, however,
look at her quizzically.
Then, after taking a big gulp
of Bud Light--they usually ask
the question,
What movie were they in?
